The best citrus fruit I ever had was the fruit that was too ripe to ship commercially. I lived in Florida as a teenager and my family would go down to the Indian River coop and buy bushels of "tree ripened" oranges, tangerines and grapefruits. They were so good. I can occasionally get good affordable citrus here, but it is nothing like the real thing. The worst lemons I ever bought in my life were from a health food store. These lemons were hard and dry with almost no juice, and they cost nearly a dollar a piece. Being organic does not always insure high quality.
By the way, it is true that some fully ripe oranges remain green, they look strange, but can be quite good. It sounds like your oranges were picked green and then were not gassed to bring out the color. The pale juice suggest they were not fully ripe when picked. I have bought that kind of orange before and they tend to be pretty bland.
