Re: Peter in Greek means rock

It's true when Christ referred to the meaning of his name (Matt 16:18) He said, "Upon this rock I will build my church" ... however, I don't think He intended to teach His church would be built upon Peter, but upon Himself (as confessed by Peter in verse 16 of the same chapter.)

Petra, petros, toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe ... Peter was but a small pebble ... Jesus, the boulder ... both are rocks, sure ... but you cannot build a firm foundation upon a mere pebble.

That Peter was ever bishop of Rome is without historical foundation. It should be noted Peter was not given the keys of the church ... he was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
