Re: Hair loss, possible answer:
I was reading somewhere recently ( I apologize - I cannot recall where right now ) - That the Japanese, who have not got the problems with hip fractures in their elder years that Americans do, get most of their calcium from their food. The Japanese love vegetables as do most Asians. The interesting thing is that the average Japanese gets somewhere around 550 or 650 Mg. of calcium from their diet. If I remember where I found the statistic, I will come back and edit this.
I have been told that we have to have at least 1500 mg a day of calcium and the proportion of calcium/magnesium is always changing and so it remains a mystery and the caveat is that you have to get the proportion right or there are all kinds of problems.
The thing is that because the calcium/magnesium comes mostly from the Japanese people's food, it has the exact correct ratio of magnesium to calcium. This is what prompted me to do my best to get my calcium from leafy greens instead of pills. I was always confused about the ratio thing - different people always say different ratios. That and the fact that I don't take to oral magnesium very well unless I were looking for a super laxative. I sure don't need that on a daily basis.
So it seems like that must mean that if you are getting the correct ratio, you don't need such a high dose because the body is absorbing it correctly. At least that is my take on it.
