Because of this method CAUSING polio outbreaks, the government discouraged use of the live vaccine in favor of the killed salk vaccine

Additionally an enhanced potency IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) has been available in the US since 1987. It will not cause vaccine-associated polio (if properly produced) and is recommended for use in immunodeficient individuals and their family members."
