You say, This is most especially true when they have been given a position of leadership within an institution because the temptation and the opportunity to become puffed up, controlling and dominating becomes extra strong.
Well this happens in all walks of life, I'm sorry but not to get caught up with farcical institutionalized spiritual abuse one unfortunately must not rely upon this so-called elitism because love cannot be found in that environment.
A good example of this trait is Scientology where they go beyond the requisite and try make believers a supreme authoritative over other religious denominations. Even within those groups you'll find the elite that appear to have power, privileges, and social status over and above the status quo.
I do not ever join such organisations, instead prefer to be self taught. It means lots of research which I am doing at the moment refraining from abusers that tell me that I am on the wrong 'pathway' etc. but in the end seek to know that I will achieve trust and belief that I cannot be shaken from. After all my goal is God and I have the Holy Spirit to guide me. The Holy Spirit is attained by ones true belief
in the Lord and that it does not require any dogma that man has entered into the fray.
That's why I say have self belief, that or put up with the elitist bullying that you speak of.
One must not become a slave of others or believe that they have to reach the so-called heights of high priest/ess to find love with anything, especially God whom already loves you and hopes that ones love is returned.
Never assume one has to prove oneself for that is the weapon of bullies. Open your heart and allow your love flow like a waterfall, naturally. So who even needs an institution? Tell them to take a hike. Blessings to you Ed.
