I'm not familiar with the types of yoga you mentioned, but I do emphathize with living in a stressful city. I used to be totally overwhelmed by all the negative things I saw around me.
However, one thing that has really helped me was first, trying to be concious of whether the thoughts I was having were negative or positive. For so many years I paid very little attention to my thoughts, feeling like they were out of my control. But once realizing how much power they had, I started being much more concious of what I was thinking. So, whenever I would have a negative thought, I'd immediately try to think of something that made me feel positive. For instance, if I was sitting in traffic, I'd try to focus on how beautiful the sky was, or how pretty the grass was -- something like that. Believe me, years ago I would have considered it "lame", being a totally negative city-dweller, but it has really, really helped me. As the law states, the more you feel grateful about, the more the universe gives you to be grateful about. It is totally true.
So anyway, to summarize my very long-winded message, when you feel negative, focus on the TINIEST thing that that makes you feel positive or happy or something that makes you feel grateful. One becomes really good at picking out these things. My life is so much better!
