Hi Moreless,
It's been awhile since I've posted. Last week, through a routine blood test, I learned that my thyroid is not functioning as it should. I am a 47 year old female. I was feeling pretty fatigued this past winter, and also had a 10 lb weight gain without changing my eating habits. I have started on medication, but was wondering if you could shed any light and/or advice on my condition.
Thanks as always for your insight.
Question: What supposed Thyroid problem is it that you are supposed to have ?
I have hypothyroidism.
You mentioned you were fatigued this past winter, what about this spring and summer, did this problem continue ?
Yes. Perhaps what I should have written is that my fatigue started this winter. It certainly has continued.
What are the medications supposed to be for ?
Synthroid (50mg) which supplements the hormones that my thryoid has quit producing.
Moreless, it has been a few days since I wrote my first post, and I have been able to do a little research on my condition since then. I'm coming to the conclusion that I think I am completely responsible for screwing up my thyroid function. In all my research, I keep seeing a common denominator.......iodine, and we all know kelp is high in iodine. I've been taking two tablespoons of kelp a day for awhile now. Here is some info I found:
thyroids are extremely sensitive to iodine, and you need to be careful about adding too much iodine to the diet as it can irritate or aggravate the thyroid
I think this is EXACTLY what I did. Now, can I repair my thryoid by completely stopping the kelp? I don't know. I feel like a complete idiot when all I was trying to do was help myself.
So, it is much more likely that this Fatigue problem is because of an imbalance of Sodium to Potassium, which is Causing the Adrenal Glands to not work properly !
Hmmmmm. In the very same blood test where it showed my thyroid isn't functioning at full capacity, it also showed my sodium and potassium numbers to be right where they should be.
My sodium number was 141 (normal range 137-146)
My potassium number was 4.0 (normal range 3.5-5.1)
