Although out of character for me, I think that the FDA may have gotten this one right. DCA was marketed prematurely by a company who seized on a lot of hopeful hype that was far from proven, and, according to my sources, was based on faulty science and unlikely to ever make it through FDA trials.
As the main DCA website admits:
"No formal research has yet been done to determine if it will work on cancer within the human body."
While DCA was totally unproven as a cancer beater, it was far from being a safe drug. The one thing that was proven about DCA was that it had significant side effects.
Again, from the DCA website itself:
"DCA can cause temporary nerve injury in the hands and feet. This is preventable, and treatable if it occurs. We have not seen this in any of our patients to date, since it typically takes several months to develop. There may be other mild to moderate side effects such as fatigue or nausea, and we have noticed confusion, tremors and memory problems with higher doses in some patients. By using a cyclic DCA dosing regimen and alpha lipoic acid, we have been able to largely prevent these side effects, while still achieving responses.
Some animal studies show that DCA can itself cause liver cancer. These studies used doses which are over 1000 times higher than what would be prescribed for cancer treatment."
So, by the off-label prescribers of DCA itself, DCA is an unproven drug that can lead to side effects, including other cancers, that have to be treated with other drugs or therapies. That sounds to me like more of the same failed approach we have had more than enough of already: drugs that treat only symptoms and not the underlying causes, which may themselves lead to cancer, and which have side effects that often lead to still more drugs and more side effects in a never ending cycle.
I am sure that the primary reason the FDA took down the website is because the marketing of an inexpensive non-pharmaceutical version of DCA posed a threat to the profits of their lord and masters - Big Pharma. In doing so, they may have unwittingly done us a favor.
No drug is safe. Period. If nature did not intend for us to put something in our bodies, it probably should not be there,
And, what the FDA will not tell you and few people realize: No drug has EVER been tested to be safe. Drug safety tests only test the one single drug against a placebo. The never test the drug in combination with other prescribed of over the counter drugs, vitamins or other natural supplements. In the real world, virtually everyone takes at least one other drug, over the counter medication, vitamin or natural supplement ALL drugs have not been truly tested for safety.
