From Dr. Jarvis
"Now let us consider why, in the treatment of arthritis, a drop of
Lugol's solution of
Iodine is added to a glass of water containing two teaspoonfuls of apple cider vinegar and two of honey at one meal on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week.
Reason One: Vermont folk medicine has learned that
Iodine is related to the ability to resist disease.
Lugol's soluution of
Iodine is prescribed in
Arthritis to enable the indiividual to avoid sickness that might make the
Arthritis worse by weakening the individual's power of resistance.
Reason Two: When I prescribed
Lugol's solution for a patient I noted that he often later reported an improvement in his arthritis, if he had that ailment besides the one for which I was treating him. This was a side result that interested me very much.
Reason Three: Iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland's proper performance of its work. This gland is located in the front part of the neck. All the blood in the body passes through it every seventeen minutes. Because the cells making up the gland have an affinity for iodine its secretion of iodine during this seventeen-minute passage kills weak germs that may have gained entry into the blood through an injury tothe skin, the lining of the nose or throat, or through the air breathed in, or the absorption of food from the digestive tract.
Strong, virulent germs are made weaker during their passsage through the thyroid gland. With every seventeen-minute passage they are made still weaker until finally they are killed, if the gland has its normal supply of iodine. If it does not, it cannot kill these germs circulating in the blood, as nature intended it should.
It is well established that the iodine content of the thyroid gland is dependent on the iodine available in the individual's food and water intake. If the iodine intake is low the gland is deprived of an element it needs to do its work.
Reason Four: We learn from Vermont folk medicine, however, that the thyroid gland performs other functions besides killing harmful germs. It also rebuilds the energy with which we do our day's work, and so there is a definite relationship between the amount of energy you have and your iodine intake.
Reason Five: Another function of iodine is to calm the body and relieve nervous tension. When tension is high there is irritability and difficulty in sleeping. The body is constantly on a combat basis, organized for fight and flight. Therefore it badly needs iodine to lessen nervous tension and enable it to organize for peace and quiet, as well as to build and store body reserves against the time of need.
Reason Six: Still another function of iodine in the huuman body relates to clear thinking. The mind simply works better when it is supplied with the iodine it needs.
These are the reasons for taking iodine. A few words might be added on how to take it. Lugol's solution of iodine is an inexpensive preparation, and when it is used to mainntain the body's iodine content the dose is small and needs to be taken only on certain days of the week. There is little of it to be found naturally in the body, no more than a trace.
It may be added to the vinegar-honey-and-water solution, one drop at one meal on Monday,Wednesday, and Friday every week. Hold the medicine dropper horizontally, so that you will get a larger drop. Stir the contents of the glass with a spoon and sip it during the meal"
