Yeah, I have long hair and I only wash it about twice a week. Occasionally three times. I don't dry it, either. I go out with it all wet, even when it's cold! Granted, I don't live in a cold climate, so it's not even freezing most of the time. But I lived in Moscow one winter and I still went out with it wet! I love it when my hair is wet but I think washing my hair is a hassle, plus it plain old just doesn't NEED to be washed every day!
I recommend anyone thinking of switching from once a day to less often do it gradually, like you recommended, Tina. First just go two days (2nd day can be "hat day" if needed!), then once that works fine and hair is nice on 2nd day, then start to go 3 days.
I had a college roommate who washed her hair twice a day and, quite frequently, THREE TIMES a day! Then she would have to dry it and style it! Good grief! But it did get oily really quickly - and that was because she washed it so much! It becomes a viscious cycle.
