I have a 7-year-old chihuahua mix who has always been in perfect health. He eats human-grade high quality dog food and still acts like a puppy. Recently, I noticed that the skin around his anus had gone from being pink to being closer to black in color (I don't get too close to it, but it looks black from a distance). Last night, I noticed that the skin on his belly is also turning from pink to black. The only thing that is different in his routine is that he has begun taking daily walks. Has anyone ever heard of this sort of thing? I don't know if I should take him to the vet or if they'd laugh at me and say I'm just a hypochondriac! It could be just a pigment change...but without seeing it, I would want to make sure that is is not a hemmorage. Cappillaries can break open and cause a deep bruising on the surface of the body. This can be a sign of vasculitis, a blood disorder which can come on a few months after vacinations (for for some other reason). This killed my dog. Be firm in checking this out. My vets brushed it off and I went back numerous times. If you think the discoloration looks like brusing, and they seem apathetic, see a blood specialist, and/or use the term vasculitis. I had never heard of it before. Also look for for large patches of grayish color to the skin.
Probably it is just pigmentation. Dog's skin is not just pink. They frequeintly have dark freckes and the pigmentation changes with their body chemistry.- Re: My dog's skin is turning black..... #65224

This is a reply to # 753,255He hasn't had any vaccinations since April, so hopefully we're out of the woods as far as vasculitis caused by vaccinations. How much time was there between your dog's vaccination and the appearance of black skin?
I feel like it's encouraging that he has absolutely no other symptoms. He's eating well, still acting like a puppy, and has no hair loss. I hope the vet will be able to determine what's going on. I made an appointment with the one who has been in practice for the longest (more than 10 years)... hopefully she's seen this before and will know what to test for.- Re: My dog's skin is turning black..... It was a matter of months...but every case is different. Thrashing the immune system can cause bleeding disorders, amoung other things, that don't show up for months down the line, but don't panic...its rare. I just wanted to give you a heads up, becuse what happened to us was horrible. It took a year to get to the point that it killed him, and when it did, it happended in three days.
I kept pointing out the deep bruise on his shoulder and they kept brushing me off. The pigmentation on dogs'skin does change often however. Naturally. I don't know what it means, but it does. They are all freckled under their hair and those freckles get lighter and darker at will.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 752,415We went to the vet today and she seems to think the problem is fleas. We haven't seen any fleas, but he has started spending a lot more time outside lately and she said that the discoloration on his hind quarters (as opposed to somewhere else on his body) makes her even more suspicious of fleas. She prescribed Frontline and said to come back if that doesn't make his skin return to normal. She said that even if that isn't the problem, she doesn't think it's anything serious and that the next thing to do would be to test for allergies.
