Hi,
Sorry I have gotten back so late in response to your question. I had my first perio laser osseous surgery yesterday. I can honestly say the procedure was not painful primarily as I got enough novacaine to deaden an elephant's teeth. The process is basically first getting a block of novacaine to numb the quadrant. Then the laser is used to open up the pockets and debride the diseased tissues. After that, a series of flushing instruments are used to further clean the pockets and smooth the bone. This was the worst part as it takes about an hour to complete. The last stage is the laser is once again used to seal the pocket and then a putty type dressing is applied to the gums which is left in place for a week to protect the area. It wasn't fun but doable. A week prior to having this procedure I had developed a buckle abscess on a lower tooth which was far more painful than the surgery, so hopefully once my full mouth is complete and with ongoing strict home maintenance I won't have further infections or bone loss. With no cutting or stitching, I would say this is definitely the lesser of two evils and I have no pain or swelling today as I write this post. If I can answer any additional question for you please don't hesitate to ask.
