In the book it says it's used to help break up mucous that's hanging around possibly being toxic. I read in a woman's post, livebetterservejesus, i think is her username, that she fasted for 58 or so days and stopped adding the cayenne after week two because there wasn't anymore mucous to deal with. This is the second time i've fasted and stopped the pepper after day 4, it burns my throat after very long and makes it much easier to drink. I'm using the capsules though so sometimes i pop one and don't have to mess with the taste. Some say that cayenne also 'heats' up your system, upping your metabolism and energy level but i don't know that to be necessarily true... So, if it works for you without the pepper, try it for a while and see if you get the same results
