The numbers you're talking about are liver enzymes. Normal levels for both is between 0 to 40. This may vary a little according to laboratory doing the test but 85 is not normal. The enzymes get elevated when something is affecting the liver, like drinking alcohol, using drugs, even some medications can elevate enzymes and of course having Hepatitis C (or any other types)can do it too.
The good news, however, is that liver enzymes have no correlation with liver damage. Enzymes can be high and the liver damage very low and viceversa. (Source: NIH Conference 2002).
Alcohol has been shown to double the rate of liver damage progression as well as having Steatosis (fatty liver cells). Your husband should loose weight if he is obese and abstain from drinking alcohol. Good luck to both of you.
