In modern closed colon hydrotherapy systems, the adult disposable plastic speculum is typically 0.60 to 0.70 inches in diameter. Some practitioners still use, or have available, stainless steel speculums that can be up to 0.75 inches in diameter, and are sterilized in an aotoclave unit.

It's rare for a closed system to become blocked. Just after insertion, water runs in and out at the same time for a few minutes and loosens and softens impacted stool. In contrast to a gravity flow unit like a Libbe, the closed system offers the therapist the option of using gentle negative pressure to pull out stubborn hardened waste matter.

It may take several inflow-outflow cycles before you begin to release, and if you have a fecal impaction, you may be disappointed with the results from your first session. But don't let that discourage you.

If you are suffering severe constipation, or feel you may be impacted, be sure to mention it when you schedule your appointment. The therapist may ask you to take something orally or even an enema before coming in.
