My wife did that combination the first time she had cancer. She didn't get the skin rash, which the water is probably causing. She had the other symptoms before starting the water, probably from the chemo. So it could be a combination of the chemo & the water, or just the water. Bottom line is like the other person said, keep doing it. Maybe slack off on the amount or the frequency for a while, but keep it up. Do as much as he can stand. Let his body be the guide. The more he does, the faster he will get through it, and the more severe the symptoms. The less he does, the longer it will take, and the less severe the symptoms he'll get. His choice. If it was me, I'd just blast through it as fast as I could. Less chance of losing the battle, and get back to normal life sooner.
