Hi Michelle,
Definitely increase the fiber gradually or you most likely will end up with unbelievable cramping. Increase water at the same time and increase exercise some as your body gets used to more fiber.
None of us could really tell you whether the tests are necessary. There are many variables. But your doctor's appointment is not for another month, so why not see what you can do between now and then? (If cramping gets really bad, or if you run a fever that gets over about 100 degree, get to the ER.)
You will find many people on the internet who say they control diverticulitis attacks only with diet. Many recommend whole grains. Personally, I do better getting fiber from veggies and fruits rather than grains. (Too much bran is definitely not a good things for me . . . and by too much I mean in the neighborhood of 4 grams a day.) I find some raw veggies (like cucumber) help. Yogurt is good, too. Getting sufficient good fat also help the GI track function. On top of adding "good" foods, it is also really helpful to faze out any junk food, fast food, processed, refined foods, etc.
