Boongie
There are a few "bile binding" medications that are prescribed to help prevent post-GB removal surgery. They include Questran (cholestyramine), Colestid (colestipol) and Welchol (can't remember generic name). I am currently on cholestyramine, which is a powder you mix in a liquid and drink before meals. I've been on it almost a week, with mixed results. Colestid comes in granules and also in a pill -- I plan to ask my surgeon about the pill at my follow-up visit January 6, if we find that I have to remain on medication. The Questran isn't very convenient. I have read in several places that it can take several weeks for the body's digestive system to return to normal after GB surgery, but approximately 1% of the no-GB population must remain on medication for life.
I have also read that calcium supplements can help with bile salt diarrhea -- what is not absorbed by the bones ends up in the intestines and either binds to or absorbs the bile salts. I haven't checked on this with my doctor, but plan to.
I hope this helps.
