I am a 17 year old male with a class III malocclusion. Currently I am 6 months into an 18 month program of braces which will be followed by corrective surgery next summer. The operation will lengthen my top jaw and shorten my bottom jaw. The underbite is about 3.5mm. My question is this, is there a possibility of a speech impediment following the surgery? Obviously this is expected in the short term but what about the long term? My dentist has not mentioned anything to suggest this but I was just wondering as to the chances of a speech impeddiment occuring and if so is it a common feature of people who have undergone this type of surgery?
