There are so many places I'd love to live just to try them on for size, but dealing with winter just won't do! :) OH no, I'm glad I'm in California.
You definitely have to limit raw foods in the winter, there's just no way they'll help you at that point. I'd eat more myself because I love the flavor of real raw foods well prepared, but when I work in an office building HOO boy I get SOOO cold thanks to that darned air conditioning they always overdo. I usually bring in a space heater LOL!
Winter is the perfect time for Kichadi and all its variations (the grain/legume 3 to 1 ratio) and root vegetables. Sweet potatos are perfect foods, very warming, especially when flavored with cinammon. Butternut squash soup, pumpkin pie, stews, soups, these will all help Vata deal with winter.
The other habit it's nice to get into is the self-massage after the morning shower with very pure sesame oil. The oil keeps the skin from cracking and drying out and keeps you warm. It's also nice to wrap a kidney bandage about the torso - just wrap a warm cloth under your clothes around your waist and secure like you would an ace bandage. Somehow, keeping the kidneys nice and warm really helps one feel grounded.
Here's to keeping warm! ;)
