The belly that you see on statues of the Buddha is symbolic rather than an actual depiction. The significance of Buddha's belly has to do with the energy that is stored in the lower chakras or dan tien...and Buddha had an abundance! In reality, he had practiced lengthy ascetic practices (extreme fasting, etc.) that emaciated him prior to him practicing the middle way and achieving enlightenment.
If you have a 'buddha belly' it would be best to work to get rid of it. Storing weight in the mid-section (apple body type) is a predictor of heart trouble. This makes sense since elevated cortisol levels are implicated in mid-section weight and stress is one of the primary sources of elevated cortisol levels.
And then again, beer will give you a buddha belly, too! :)
