Amanda - I can only speak for myself,
but in my case my mercury fillings didn't give me any *obvious* symptoms most of my life - that doesn't mean they weren't a drain on my immune-system/physiology, but just that I was "normal".
As your doc says an otherwise healthy body can cope with almost anything - even the 2nd most toxic element on earth - mercury. That doesn't mean that you aren't affected on a physiological level - it just means that your body masks all the damage that mercury is doing.
However along comes something else - in my case it was stress combined with a severe viral illness - EBV/glandular-fever/mono. That sent me over the edge. I never recovered my health and candida took hold.
I have tried all manor of treatments to get rid of candida for the last 3 years. You name it I've tried it. Something is keeping the candida there.
Healthy people don't get candida. For a HIV positive person getting candida is a medically recognized sign that they have developed full-blown Aids. Now I'm not saying that Hiv has anything to do with us, but what I am saying is that the medical establishment know that you need to be immune compromised to get candida.
What the nature of that immune compromise is maybe different for each person. I'm certainly not saying *everyone* has mercury issues. But in todays society arguably we are all immune compromised given the number of toxic substances we are regularly exposed to (that combined with suboptimal nutrition etc. etc.). Well what about healthy people? It goes back to my first point. If you are basically healthy your body will be able to fight all manner of insult that you throw at it.
If however you get an unfortunate coiincidence of several factors your immune system can be torn apart. Once you get to this stage, otherwise seemingly innocuous toxins like mercury can keep you stuck there. You are trapped in a viscious circle so to speak, and the more drains you have on your physiology the less well it will perform.
When this happens your body can no longer tolerate things like mercury. More and more sick people are finding that their ailments do not respond to treatment unless they get rid of their
Amalgam fillings. A subset of these find that even removing the
Amalgam is not enough - they must chemically remove all remaining mercury from their body - a process known as chelation.
There are many casestudies of people who have recovered from candida by either removing
Amalgam or chelating. Here are 2 to get you started:

Note in the first case-study that the author had candida for 10 years and did not recover until he removed all his
Amalgams *and* chelated. Now I'm not saying everyone has a mercury problem, all I'm saying is that many people with candida do - and it is certainly something to be aware of.
