Dear JV, I sympathize! I'm quite new here and I just want you to know I've appreciated your reasoned responses to the questions and ideas I've posted.
Back in the 80's I was diagnosed with Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome
(one of that first group in Tahoe.) I was quite fit and had to quit a wonderfully active & fun job. I suddenly couldn't remember numbers -- even my own phone number! For over a year I couldn't get out of bed or walk up stairs. It was a chore to even communicate. I was dreadfully lonely.
I eventually got over it but then 15 years later (8 months ago,) an accident put me in the hospital. That started a terrible digestive odyssey familiar to everybody on this forum.
I'm happy to say that the worst part for me is over because of something I did out of sheer desperation. It's drastic and while I can't recommend it to others, it fixed my digestive tract.
First you need to know that among other things, since my terrible diarrhea, bloating and gas occurred after eating ANY food, not just carbs, I came to believe that I had Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
Next, on top of those nasty digestive problems, I suddenly developed painful "shingles" on my torso and back. I was terrified so I copied the protocol used by the doctor on the above link which begins by taking an Antibiotic
like "Cipro". (Within a day, the pain from my welts was gone.) Simultaneously for 3 weeks I "starved the bacteria -- I ate nothing but a medical "elemental" diet that AIDS patients use when wasting. It is mostly amino acids -- pre-digested so your digestive tract can take a big long rest and regroup and rebuild. I supplemented the "Vivonex" with a functional food by Biogenesis called Bioinflammatory Plus that I swear by. Both Vivonex and this other contain HUGE amounts of glutamine which is evidently what the colon uses to rebuild its microvilli. I received colon hydrotherapy every 4 days or so.
Long story short -- it worked like a charm. When I carefully started back with food, gradually I found I could eat anything! I'm still ecstatic about it.
The only problem is 2 weeks into my Vivonex "fast", I suddenly became exhausted and ridiculously depressed, something I wasn't feeling when I was having the otherwise miserable bacterial infection problems. Candida had evidently made its move! All that "hummingbird food" was probably feeding the fungus? Maybe the bad bacteria was what was keeping the Candida in check?
What I'm getting at with this long post (sorry!) is that in spite of my current problem with Candida, my digestion "issues" are otherwise completely gone. In fact, my colon works better than at any time in my life.
I'm thinking it was the glutamine and the "time off" it received.
So now, even as I have a lot of die-off symptoms from the strict Candida diet I eat and the loads of probiotics I take, the smell from the Candida gas emissions is nothing like the caustic fumes from the bacteria. (And yes I'm getting all that white toilet- papery stuff too:)
Anyway, I can report that I now know the difference between the two problems, bacterial and fungus and I'm hoping maybe something in my crazy bacteria story might help a digestive rebuild in your case? I don't necessariy recommend Vivonex but the Bioinflammatory sure might help. Anyway, it just seems like you've gone too long a time with digestion problems.. I wish you all the luck there is!
