I highly recommend a pre-cleanse fruit/veg diet. Eat this way for 3-5 days before attempting your fast.
Breakfast: Big bowl of fresh fruit with NATURAL yogurt.
Lunch: Big salad dressed with fresh lemon, good oil like ex-virg olive or flax, garlic and Sea Salt
Dinner: Homemade vegetarian vegetable soup, all you like
NO breads, no sugar, nothing but the above... and all the FRESH fruit and veggie juices you like in between, fruit in the am, veg in the pm. And lots of pure water, of course. NO smoking during this pre-cleanse. This will gently get your body into cleansing, and will make the notoriously difficult first week of your fast much, much easier! Also, it helps gently get your mind into a disciplined mode.
If you are TRULY having a tough time, go for only a three day fast, and follow with another 3-5 days of the pre-cleanse diet. Then, if you are ready, go into a 5 day fast, followed by 3-5 more days diet. This is almost as effective a cleanse as going the full 10, and is much easier for a first time faster. It takes time to learn that fasting can be wonderful, VERY pleasant, and we certainly are not going to expire from missing a few days of 3 squares! Take it from someone who has done the pre-cleanse diet for 30 days followed by two months of fasting with incredible results!
