A hernia patch most likely is in for life, I doubt one could cut it out and be able to sew the hole up, if the holes could be sewed up in the first place they would not use a patch. Many times patches don't last because the person still abuses their body and a hernia starts in a new location.
Once the Immune System surrounds the patch, seales it off from the body, most likely it will leave it alone somewhat, but that patch is no cure, it is a medical method to extend lifespan the best possible way it knows how to.
To cure a hernia naturally would take lots of time, rest and perfect diet, something modern man will never do, so the patch is extremely common, these hospitals thrive off of the Amish, many, many amish men and women have hernia patches, a result of wrong diet and too hard work.
