I am taking ascorbic acid in the morning with breakfast, and I am also taking niacin at the same time, both of them powders. So, it makes sense to just put them in the same glass and add water. Well, I've noticed that sometimes it is easier to mix powders in general with water if you just add a little water, stir it up, and then add more water (for example, I mix cocoa powder with things this way). So, I tried this with the C and niacin, because I had noticed that there was undissolved powder in the bottom, and I didn't like that. Strangely, it got a little thicker and turned yellow. I was puzzled, why did it do this, is there a chemical reaction or something. So, I googled it.
As it turns out, yes, it is a chemical reaction. When things oxidize vitamin C into dehydroascorbate, it turns yellow (or maybe brown).
What I am wondering, is how concerned I should be about this? Will the oxidized C still do anything good in my body? If I dissolve them separately and drink them one after the other will it still do the same thing in my stomach? What should I do instead?
