Our woods are loaded with these right now in bloom and when they are blooming, under "normal" conditions, the mushrooms "should" be up. BUT WHY take a chance when "they" suggest:
The plant is reported to contain a toxic saponin[274]. Although toxic, saponins are poorly absorbed by the body and most pass straight through without any problem. They are also broken down to a large extent in the cooking process. Saponins are found in many foods, such as some beans. Saponins are much more toxic to some creatures, such as fish, and hunting tribes have traditionally put large quantities of them in streams, lakes etc in order to stupefy or kill the fish.
"stupefy or kill"
Those are TWO pretty strong words.................
WHY BOTHER???? IS MY THEORY! DR. CHRISTOPHER SAID HE WAS TRAINED TO BE CAPABLE OF USING 2,000 HERBS, BUT CHOSE TO USE LESS THAN 100, BECAUSE HE BELIEVED IT WAS REDICULOUS TO MESS WITH PLANTS THAT COULD BE "POISONOUS"..
YES, THESE INTERNET / GOVERNMENT SCIENTIST DO OFTEN EXAGERATE AND TRY TO EVEN SAY MANY OF THE SAFE HERBS ARE TOXIC, SO IDEALLY CHECK WITH THE GERMAN HERBAL MEDICAL BLUE BOOK AND GIVE THE PLANTS A MORE THOROUGH READING ON BEFORE YOU DECIDE AND THEN ALWAYS PLAY IT SAFE AND TAKE SMALL DOSES AND KEEP LOBELIA TINCTURE HANDY AT ALL TIMES IN CASE YOU POISON YOURSELF.
GOOD LUCK,
