Financially, California was "dead" two years ago. They sold equipment such as police cars, offices equipment and chairs, etc. and issued vouchers instead of paychecks, but many other states are in very bad financial condition also.

I live in New York, NY (Manhattan Island). The "Christmas Snowstorm" was made worse because the unions encouraged a work slowdown (in this economy, people still play job games, go figure), but in the Mayor's news conference that followed, one reporter asked "Where's the money going to come from in the future?". The Federal gov't. is broke (in reality), but if the debt ceiling is raised, the fed. gov't. will TECHNICALLY still be solvent.

In a recent study, college campuses have a high ' Depression rate' (sure, looking at the economy alone, the students definitely do not have a bright future).
