The Side Effects of
Black-Walnut
Juglans nigra, more commonly known as
Black-Walnut , is a hardwood tree native to the United States, Canada and parts of Europe. The fruit of the tree, also called
Black-Walnut , is a rich source of protein, essential fatty acids and various minerals. Additionally, people use the tree's inner bark and leaves, along with walnuts and nut hulls, in traditional herbal remedies for killing bacteria and parasites, and for relieving symptoms of skin disorders. Although no research with humans supports any benefits for using black walnut as an herbal remedy, according to Drugs.com, it is generally safe to use and side effects are uncommon.
Allergic Reaction
People who are allergic to walnuts should not use black walnut herbal remedies. Individuals allergic to other nuts, particularly pecans, also are at increased risk for an allergic reaction to black walnut, according to the American Cancer Society. This includes anyone allergic to peanuts, which are technically legumes. Reactions to black walnut may have symptoms of breathing problems, tightness in the throat or chest, chest pain, swollen skin, hives or rash. An allergic reaction to black walnut should be considered a medical emergency, because nut allergies can lead to the life-threatening anaphylactic shock.
