My sister struggles with binge eating, and is slightly overweight as a result. She is planning to do a water fast, as she believes that this will help her drop weight fast, aid self-esteem, alter her relationship with food, and be able to stop the bingeing.
She is aiming to do 28 days, and believes that she can start eating 2000 calories a day after she breaks the fast, generally eating healthy, with fruit/veg, but also continuing to eat meat, dairy, and sugar. Basically, I think she plans to follow the diet of most average weight people- healthy enough, but with indulgences. She says that if she eliminates anything, like candy for example, she will just wind up bingeing on it, which I suppose could be a valid point.
However, I do not believe that this will work for her, as I am certain that she will just gain the weight back with this sort of diet, either instantly, or gradually and will ultimately become discouraged. She disagrees with this, saying that people who regain weight after fasting from resuming their habits are people with unhealthy, excessive diets in the first place, who regularly exceed their calorie requirements, and that she isnt in that position- the only reason for her higher weight is her bingeing habits.
Could anybody clear this up for us? I'm not talking about the weight gain that is inevitable (5-10lbs) but further gain. Would there be any benefit to her doing this, weight-wise, or is she just likely to regain all the weight and/or damage/slow her metabolism?
Any feedback would be really appreciated- I just want the best for her!
Many thanks,
Lilac
