Well, at the time that I tried using the diflucan, there were differing views medically on this sickness. Some people argued diet wasn't as important. Perhaps I should rephrase that - they argued that you should follow the diet to reduce your symptoms, but only as needed to allow you to be functional. Since my primary symptom at the time was recurring vaginal yeast infections ( my gut symptoms weren't as bad then), I decided to "believe" the proponents that said you didn't really need to follow the diet, just use long term diflucan to kill it for a period of several months until your body was able to slough off the vaginal skin cells that harbored the yeast. Then you could go off of the diflucan. The first time I did this (around the year 1998) I thought I was "cured." I was able to go for about 2 years without treatment, and then the disease flared up again (2001). When I tried to use diflucan again this time, it didn't work. So I switched to nystatin. I took oral nystatin in pill form for about a year, and again was able to go without treatment for about 1- 2 years, and then it was back again (2004). That was when my doc prescribed the liquid nystatin, and the situation I described occured. I don't know if long term use of one type of drug or herb would really truly be able to wipe out the disease if you kept your carbs extremely low or not - maybe it would. I didn't follow the diet to the extreme ( for example - atkins diet), I yo-yoed back and forth. Tried Atkins for a year or two in 2001, felt lots better, but couldn't stick to it. I also followed a pretty strict diet from December 2008 until July of 2009 ( about 75 carbs daily),lost 12
pounds (and I'm a relatively thin woman) of about 5 ft 5" which put me at about 125
pounds then. Felt much better again, but when I added the carbs back in, the symptoms came back (and so did the weight). I also used lots of different types of probiotics (threelac, culturelle, and others) throughout those years - but not necessarily after a 5 or 6 month cleansing as is now suggested by some. I actually believe I was suffering from a bacterial infection in 2008 - simply from using probiotics too religiously.
In all fairness, I didn't carefully follow any protocol, and I have never had my stool tested, so I don't really know if I can say exactly what I have in my gut right now. I know that I started with a bad vaginal yeast infection in 1996, used the usual creams prescribed by my GP, and then about a month later had strep throat and used a strong
Antibiotic to kill it. After that, I started having recurring vaginal yeast infections every month, otherwise I might never have even known I had chronic candida.
