A Mosque at Ground Zero

Assume for a moment that Japanese kamikaze pilots wanted to build a monument at Pearl Harbor. Do you think there would be controversy?

That is what’s happening in New York City, as a Islamic Imam and other Islamic groups want to build a mosque and a large Islamic community center two blocks from ground zero, where Islamic terrorists few planes into the Twin Towers.

Community meetings are being held, and the debate has turned raucous. Opponents of the mosque request that the location be turned into a landmark to memorialize the victims of the September 11 attack, instead of “a citadel to Islamic supremacy,” as one speaker described it. Proponents for the building of the mosque decry their opponents as islamaphobic and racist—labels that some people revert to when it appears their opponent might be winning the debate.

After the September 11 attacks, Muslims were circulating pictures on the Internet—photos that had been doctored by Photoshop techniques. Apparently Muslims thought the pictures were hilarious. One showed the Statue of Liberty shrouded in a full veil. Another showed New York City covered with mosques and minaret towers. The picture carried the caption: “New York City 2006,” implying that the attack had cleared the way for Muslims to turn NYC into another Mecca.

The Muslim American Society, one of the groups involved, has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a known terrorist organization with links to Hamas. The NYC Imam who is pushing for the construction of this mosque does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Pastor Jerry Collins was in NYC this year, the day the car bomb was set to go off. He saw a Muslim preaching against America and saying things that would qualify as hate speech. This Muslim was being protected by two New York police officers. Down the street were two young ministers from David Wilkerson’s Times Square Church, and they were continually being stopped by New York police and asked for their permit papers. The Christians were being harassed while the Muslim was being protected.

It appears that those who love America are losing their Constitutional freedoms, while the enemies of America are being coddled and protected as they use our laws of freedom against us. As one opponent of the mosque stated, “In the end, it’s just us or them. The sense that we are all one and we are all working together is just not reality.”

Muslims know that America stands firm for religious freedom, even though if the tables were turned, Christians or Jews would never be permitted to “defile” the ground with a church or synagogue in most Islamic countries. Benjamin Netanyahu once warned us that the fanatics would use America’s freedoms against us one day. I believe that day is upon us.
