Whatever you do, warn the person you know w/ Graves or suspected Graves to NOT even think about thyroid ablation. Once it's gone, they're screwed.
The 3 options for Graves disease (hyper) is thyroid suppression meds, surgical removal, and albation...normally with a "hot" dose of I131 which kills the thyroid with Beta decay. Gamma emission also comes with I131 decay, and this gamma decay will fry the entire family or anyone in close proximity of the patient as I131 has an 8.1 day half-life (T1/2) and is "hot" with a primary gamma emission of 364kVp. Surgical removal isn't foolproof as thyroid tissues can grow anywhere in the body, evident in post cancer-treatment whole-body I131 scans. That's why thyroid cancer patients go for whole-body scans every 6mos after, then 1 year, etc...is because the cancerous thyroid tissue can pop up anywhere in the body, even in extremities and start the cancerous tissue growth again.
BTW, some people are also asymptomatic and don't even have the bulging eyes (exophthalmos) or tachycardia (faster heartbeat) or other sx's.
I'd take them to your NRT guy...that's your best bet. I had a friend of mine that I suspected had a thyroid issue as she's in her 30s and was losing patches of hair. I sent her to my NRT guy and he fixed the problem w/ herbs and she grew back her hair! I was shocked myself at the rapid fix; the problem was corrected with simple herbs. I can get the names of the herbs if you want them, but I'm sure your Dr. Hardy can handle this.
