It is best to always use CS (cut/sifted) for tincturing. The only herb I've heard of that just isn't available in CS is Lady Slipper.
If CS is not available then the only thing to do if you need a tincture is to use the powdered herb but NEVER mix powdered with CS.
We measure the herbs by volume not by weight. If you have 1 cup of a cut and sifted herb (C/S) and 1 cup of a powered herb the volume would not be the same. Therefore if your formula called for equal parts of lets say 5 herbs and you've got 4 herbs C/S and 1 herb powdered there is no way that 1 cup of C/S would equal the 1 cup of the powered herb so you'd be shorting yourself on the 4 C/S herbs in your formula.
To prove this out you can take 1 cup of a C/S herb, put it in a Vitamix and powder it and you'll have about 1/2 cup of powdered herb. ;)
When I did all my tincturing I ordered everything from MR simply because they were a whole lot cheaper. I did however have to order a few things from PB that MR was out of. I also had to get two things from Starwest that the other two didn't have.
For the Echinacea tincture you want to use equal parts of the Angustifolia root and the Purpurea root.
Uny uses the fresh whenever she can get it because it seems to make a stronger tincture but keep in mind that Uny has told me that root is a HUGE chore to chop up lol.
When I made my Echinacea tincture I bought both the dried CS root from MR and my tincture is really strong of course the longer it tinctures the stronger it will get.
Have fun Teresa, I had a blast working with the herbs, it made me so happy!
You assume correctly about what you want to order to make the Echinacea tincture.
I ordered a pound of each Echinacea, I've now made 2 gallons of tincture and still have about 1/2 a pound of each herb.
I put 1 cup of each herb in a 1/2 gallon jar and pour plenty of vodka over it, as it swells you add more vodka and have no doubt it WILL swell HUGE lol. After 3 days you macerate it and put it back in the jar and let it tincture.
Below is a picture of one of the 1/2 gallon jars of Echinacea tinctures so you can see how much float is on top. This jar has more float than any of my other tinctures, it looks like more in the picture but in reality it's only about 2 1/2 inches of float.
So if you're using quart jars (2 qts. = 1/2 gallon) then I'd say you want to put 1/2 cup of each of the herb. I knew that Echinacea was the root herb that swelled the most, I'd read Uny's post about it lol so I wanted to make sure that didn't happen to me. The first batch I made I used 1 & 1/2 cups of each herb and when they swelled I had to split the jars because there wasn't enough room, it really shocked me! You might even want to start with 1/3 cup of each but I'd say you'd be safe with 1/2 cup each, just be sure you've got extra jars to split it just in case lolol!
I don't know how often you're gonna be taking it but just so you can maybe judge how much to make, my husband and I take it on a daily basis (sometimes I don't take it though) as a preventative and because it is so great for you. There have been a couple of times when I've taken as much as a couple of ounces in a day when I felt like I was coming down with something. I started my first tinctures in October of last year and we're now on our second gallon. How much to tincture at any given new moon depends entirely on how much you intend to take, just be sure you've got enough.
I ordered all my herbs by the pound because I took into account the cost of shipping. I figured it would be cheaper in the long run to have stock of each herb so I would only have to pay shipping once.
Be sure and don't get freaked out if you end up having to split the jar, that's part of the fun of it. I think it was Uny who said something like, it ain't rocket science folks lolol!
Hope this helps Teresa.
Thank you, THANK YOU! You are more than welcome!
You are an Absolute Blessing:))) Thank you, and you are a blessing too Teresa! I can see a difference in you just by reading your posts and from the willingness you have to help others. You've really grown in the last month, that's what happens when you start healing YAY for you!!!!
This is awesome information, I really do need the play by play, lol. I'm so pleased that a pound will go that far- I definitely want to always have some on hand. I realized that getting stuff locally was just not going to cut it, and I now have the opportunity to order some herbs, so I'm going for it! I'm so excited! This is so empowering:D It absolutely is empowering and just wait until you get those herbs in your little hands! There is nothing quite like the goodness you feel and how happy it makes you to feel so empowered knowing that you're healing with herbs you've tinctured!
Thank you again for these instructions! Again, you're very welcome! I will save it on my favs...goshdarnit, I gotta organize those too, lol! I have so many of the important posts saved, but in a pinch I'm usually scrambling to find the info:) I've got way too many in mine because I've accidently hit favorites and put posts in there I didn't want there lol, but there is no way to delete them or to orgainze them as far as I know. If you find a way, please let me know.
Blessings, Blessings to you too!
