To me the source of mercury is coal fired electric plants, many in China that spread mercury around the globe, or at least as far as the western states of America (and maybe the mid-west.)

Then there are the coal fired plants in the US that have destroyed many forests in Canada and east. Between China and America there is enough mercury to go around for all!
