Dear Dr. Jeff,
I posted a question some time ago re: severe insomnia, and I never saw your answer until now. I'll repost your answer below this post for your reference. You mentioned several possible causes. I don't think it's adrenal dysfunction because my naturopath tested me through muscle testing and said my adrenals were just fine. What you said about the blood/brain barrier got my attention. I had my amalgams removed and did a detox for mercury. But there are likely other metals in my system as well as inflammatory particles, etc. At this point I have started taking medication prescribed by a medical doctor because I was absolutely desperate for sleep. But I would like to get at the root cause because the medication does not work very well. Is a GABA challenge something I could do on my own, or would I need to be supervised by a professional?
Thank you so much for your anticipated response.

Another possibility is permeability of the blood/brain barrier, sort of like a leaky gut of the brain. This allows heavy metals, chemicals, inflammatory particles, etc to constantly have access to the brain, when they shouldn't. This can cause ongoing imbalances and inflammation of the brain. To check this, one needs to do a GABA Challenge by taking 1000mg of GABA about 4 hours before bed. If this calms, relaxes, or makes them tired, then they a blood/brain barrier dysfunction that needs to be corrected.
Overburdened detoxification organs may also interfere with sleep. The main detoxification organs of the body work all day long, but work more a lot while we sleep. They need a lot of energy to work while we sleep. This can relate back to the low blood sugar/adrenal problem or affect the flow of energy through the acupuncture meridians.
If you take any type of medication, this can also be a problem.>>
