Amazing !!! Strawberry plants double...

Amazing !!! I transplanted some of my strawberry plants last year into a newly soil amended garden bed ala Moreless and they have doubled in size !
These are the biggest Strawberry plants I have ever had or can remember seeing any where although I don't know that many people who grow their own strawberries! The plants biggest leaves still left in my old strawberry patch measure 2"x2 1/2", pitiful I know but they have been there a long time and are crowded out by other things! The new strawberry leaves measure 4"x5 1/2" and are flowering already ,its been a cold spring here ,in fact I was going to wait to post about these plants until after I harvested some of the berries to relate the brix reading but with this ongoing coldness, 54 degrees today, I don't know how long that will be!
I wish I would have just went ahead and transferred all of them last year, but I'm not too concerned now considering the improvement in size in just one year, I can wait that long! When I show them to my friends the first thing they say is WOW! lol!
I thank you Moreless and so does my garden!

I have one single strawberry just planted into a hanging basket. I'm afraid my basket was not deep enough after adding moss as a lining.
Just playing with the idea...plus I hope to learn a thing or two from JustinL as he experiments.
I've started another bed today but may just let it be for this year and perhaps use it next year....even though I'm very tempted to put it to good use. Trying to observe the land sabbath principle but need more beds if I'm going to do that.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,420,524Yes it was not easy leaving that bed fallow for a year,(actually two years) but it is worth it! Just received 10 bails of hay for the garden I could hear it thanking me !

This is a reply to # 1,420,528I normally get alfafa hay from my sister but since she has gone to the super large bails, I decided to go to my local feedstore and was shocked how high it was these days.
I wonder how many acres it takes to make 10 bails? 1 or 2?

This is a reply to # 1,420,547Hay is getting expensive around here ! Especially the small bails, they will run 4 or 5 bucks a piece if you can get them!
I was fortunate in meeting a guy who has a few horse and he had a these bails in his barn, they are few years old but they have been inside so I am assuming they will be fine as far as nutrient loss goes! He asked me if I wanted some manure for the garden ,he was kind of shocked when I told him no! I don't believe my garden needs any more high nitrogen fertilizers, at least not now.- --Manure or Not?-- moreless

Answer: If you have some area where you may want to plant a garden next year where it is in need of Improving that you are not planting a garden in this year, you may apply the manure and let weeds grow and work them in each month and this may set this up Better for next year to grow a garden?
If one applies some manure a year ahead of time and allow the weeds to take this up and work the weeds into the soil to feed the soil Life we may be able to speed up soil Improvement?
The Key is not using any Fresh Manure in the same year we want to grow our food to eat, for Fresh Manure may cause the plants to contain Potassium Nitrate(NPN)?

This is a reply to # 1,420,582Thanks for the tip ML! I do have a space I am leaving alone this year so maybe I will call him up! I kind of put him off because I didn't want him to do all that work for me as he lives 20 miles away but maybe I will borrow my other buddy's pick up truck and go get it myself! I'm also thinking I can clean out his stalls for him to pay him back for these favors!

When first starting a garden it seemed so easy, then as years pass by and your soil becomes depleted you begin to see that having a green thumb or being lucky enough to have a green thumb is a little more then an ego trip!
Proper understanding of soil is critical and there is no better place to learn this then right here!
We should all consider ourselves very very fortunate to have a teacher like Moreless!
