The article is correct, simple thiols pick up mercury and can redistribute it around the body. DMPS and DMSAA are double thiol bonds which lock onto Mercury and don't let go until it is eliminated, usually through the kidneys.
For aluminum the best thing is magnesium malate, which is magnesium bound to Malic acid. this will chelate the aluminum. I do not believe that thiol bonds chelate aluminum at all.
