As a kid, I spent hours, all summer long, flipping rocks over and looking for critters.
I caught just about every type of snake native to central New York except a water snake, which are the only real mean ones we have around here (rattlers were killed off everywhere but the Adirondacks, Catskills, and one refuge in the Finger Lakes).
Garters (couple different kinds), grass snakes, ringneck snakes, milk snakes.
Saw a little king snake once but hesitated because they look like corals -- coral snakes don't live this far north but I wasn't sure on that at the time so missed my chance.
Came across a rat snake once near Albany but didn't try to grab it. It had to have been five or six feet long.
