Hi, ML!
Even on years like this one when my focus is on remodeling, I "keep my hand in" by growing a few things, saving seeds, and experimenting a bit.
Triumphs this year included:
The very-hi brix winter squash. Since there has been no freeze, it is still producing, tho more slowly due to less light and heat!
Recycled green onions...grown by planting a bit of the roots and abt 1/2 inch of the white part of the best quality onions I could find right side up, about 1-1 1/2 inch deep. They lasted from last spring all through the summer drought with very little water. I just harvest leaves, leaving enough for continued growth. Am wondering how long they will last here in CA if I protect them from the few frosts!!!! BTW, these are sweet and delicious, seem to keep indefinitely in the fridge after cutting.
Of course, I still have my home-grown oregano, with more than enough to share with anyone who wants some. Also bay leaves! They are a great replacement for [very toxic] mothballs as well as a superb seasoning. I have no trouble finding takers for the increasingly copious supply that my tree is producing!
This soil has not been deliberately poisoned for at least 20 years, and has had mulching over that period. If ever I want to give things a little boost, I use some calcium hydroxide, ES or a very dilute kelp fertilizer spray. On seeds, seedlings, and such starts as onions above I use dilute alk drink.
Right now, I have a bowl with a little dilute alk drink feeding the core of a good quality romaine lettuce. Leaves are regrowing from this! Our loving Creator has designed everything so wonderfully! Every good gift and every perfect present are indeed from him!!!! [James 1:17]
All this was done in a few minutes here and there, and could have been done with room to spare in containers at an apartment or condominium. The joy, satisfaction, and stimulus to be in awe of and praise our loving Creator are PRICELESS!!!!
If we would all begin wherever we can to try growing things, ask questions here, and learn, so much could be accomplished!!! Let us not despise "the day of small things..." [Zechariah 4:10]
Wishing all here the joy, satisfaction and security that can come from knowing how to grow our own food!!!!
