FYI,Organic Lead (TEL ie Tetra Eythl Lead) for paint had quadupled in cost, once the 5 sisters decided to take it out of gasoline (they foumd a cheaper alternative). Texaco developed a maganese anti-knock compound which was first used as a subsitute in the 70's. Refiners now use Cumene to boost Octane numbers.
Organic lead is still used in AV-GAS, there no way in hell those Radial plane engines will run on less. Of course the use cumene to bump the Octane to 120+ then add the lead.
Titanium Dioxide ( TiO2) was found to be a good substitute for wood paints. Metal primer for bridge steel, storage tanks, steel towers etc are still painted with lead paint. Nothing protects steel like a good coat of lead paint.
