"Preterm births in the United States vary month to month in a recurrent and
seasonal manner. Pesticides and nitrates similarly vary seasonally in surface
water throughout the U.S. Nitrates and pesticides can disrupt endocrine hormones
and nitric oxide pathways in the developing fetus," Winchester said.
and
"A growing body of evidence suggests that the consequence of prenatal exposure
to pesticides and nitrates as well as to other environmental contaminants is
detrimental to many outcomes of pregnancy. As a neonatologist, I am seeing a
growing number of birth defects, and preterm births, and I think we need to face
up to environmental causes," Winchester said.
And more by Grz:
After having used a refractometer, the issue with ADDED NPN non-food substances
in foods imported from China and elsewhere, the many recent scientific articles
(spurred in part by the China scandal) along with the one (probably one of many)
published in 1922 AND personally, having been directly exposed to these nitrates
over the course of my life, and knowing what my own problems have been and are,
there is absolutely no reason to doubt the problem we face with them; just one
of many.
I suspect the issue is coming out of the closet due to the food scandals.
Could this be one of the many reasons those who serve as employees on corporate
farms in the U.S. and elsewhere have so many health problems?

While many ailments and injuries are difficult to treat, Dr. Hendrikson stresses
that those associated with drinking water problems are the most manageable.
Unsafe drinking water is often a big problem in many of the rural camps where
migrant workers live. Tainted water supplies in these areas may contain harmful
amounts of lead, nitrates and other toxins, and/or may be contaminated with E.
coli and other parasites. These contaminated sources often supply not only the
drinking water for farm workers, but also for the families and children that
travel with them.

Groundwater Pollution in Mexico City
Downs et al. (p. 553) analyzed untreated wastewater from the Mexico City basin
for trace metals, organics, chlorinated pesticides, PCBs, nitrate, and coliform
bacteria. Infants were at risk from methemoglobinemia from the nitrates, and
coliform levels indicated fecal contamination and potential risk of
gastrointestinal disease.
Children's Health
Nitrate Source for Blue Babies
A review by Avery (p. 583) contends that gastrointestinal infection, irritation,
and overproduction of nitric oxide causes infantile methemoglobinemia. The
author suggests that the current nitrate water standard be changed and the extra
resources be used to reduce bacterial contamination of water supplies.
