What are the ramifications of this? Does this enable one to see multiple docs, for multiple scrips, and have them filled at various pharmacies? Does this protect the patients privacy in doing this?

To the dismay of the health care industry, the recent privacy rules, in effect as of April 14, 2003, require patients to supply permission to hospitals, doctor’s offices and pharmacies in order for their records to be disclosed. For the first time, a federal law, rather than a patchwork of state regulations will protect the confidentiality of medical files. This consent requirement not only creates excessive amounts of paperwork for patient and staff alike, but could also cause a substantial (and possibly critical) delay in health care and treatment.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,198,594'Paperwork'... what a joke! Hospitals are rapidly moving to electronic charting... along with the ability to simply and rapidly alter medical records. All this talk about confidentiality and protecting patient's rights is just another smokescreen that creates a false sense of security in the mind's of the public. And it's just another way that money is being wasted in the 'health care' business... which no longer has anything to do with health or care! It's ALL BUSINESS!

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,198,608The cause of my concern is my brother, I just talked with my sis-in-law. He's doing that, multiple scrips for painkillers.
She can't do a damned thing about it, because of the HIPAA act.

This is a reply to # 1,198,617It's the 11th anniversary of my own mother's heart failure (she lasted two days before passing - never having waken up) and my MIL was just put into the hospital today with chest pain and pressure. They're concerned about a potential bloodclot.
She won't clean up her diet, thinks I'm the crazy one, and is on multiple drugs.
She is on more scriipts than you can shake a stick at.
She is bought and sold and thinks she is doing the right thing.
*sigh*-

This is a reply to # 1,198,629Yeah, I took my daughter to see the medical doctor (I knew she didn't "require" any shots) to enter the 5th grade last year. I noticed the MD looked a good deal older than the last time I saw him.
On the other hand, after seeing my local chiropractor (who is into nutritional health products) recently for my sciatica, he looks a good deal YOUNGER since the last time I saw him over three years ago (he's 57).
And MD's call chiropractors and alternative medicine a form of quackery.
This world is SO fvcked up.
Yeah, my parents told me to stay away from the long-hair (and bearded) types too. Moms and Dads aren't always so right, are they? I married a "clean-cut boy."

This is a reply to # 1,198,632and ya remember my friend with leukemia? She also had cysts on her ovaries. She went in yesterday to have one ovary removed. She got a hysterectomy.
She just told me the other day "oh, I have the BEST doctors, I'm receiving the BEST possible care..."
She does NOT have the self-discipline required to supplement iodine. She is too WEAK to be resposible for herSELF. In fact, she thinks I'm whacko.
And now what? She's going to hate me because I am intact, because I am right.(that's a huge statement)
Don't we deal with that ALL THE TIME, though? Kindred spirits are few and far between, in "real" life. Thank God for you, and for all of us, and for the internet.
