Hi Loosie, I fasted without supervision for 27 days on my first fast. And like you, I didn't go to the doctors for the same reasons. Instead, I used a blood pressure meter and heart rate monitor and a clinical thermometer. I also bought a stethoscope (a bit OTT and I have never used it) and some 10 in 1 urine test strips from an online pharmacy.
The above kit was useful in reassuring me, especially the blood pressure and heart meter, and the test strips.
Like you I drank a lot of alcohol in my life, but since I started fasting in November 2007 I have not touched a drop. And believe me, that was a completely unintended consequence, which took no effort on my part. I have no desire to drink now. Fasting re-educates your body so it knows what's good for it and what's not.
Also, speaking of white coats, the following can be irritating at first, but I can't help but laugh when it happens now. Here's a typical conversation with friends:
"Have some of this (food)."
"No thanks, I'm fasting"
"Fasting, I'm not eating any food"
"Have some salad then"
"No, I'm fasting. I'm not eating anything"
"What about some diet lemonade?"
"I am not eating anything at all, I am fasting"
"You must be eating something"
"So you are just taking vitamins, or health foods or something?"
"NO! I am not eating anything! I only drink water!"
(Then there is usually a look of shock and a period of silence)
"When did you last eat?"
"Oh, around xxxx(date)"
"You can't do that"
"Yes I can"
"You'll die. Have you seen a doctor?"
"No, why should I? There's nothing wrong with fasting"
"You're mad. You could collapse and die..."
I usually start laughing at the point where they look shocked, but I have had all sorts of offers, eg ring me up every day to see that I have not collapsed, come around with some food if I need it, phone a doctor if I need it. Now after my 5th fast and 38Kg lost there is a status quo, they think I am mad, I think they are victims of western consumer culture and I feel sorry for them. I am happy with that status quo.
The other thing is all those voices contradicting fasting can put doubts in your mind too, and I have to say I found curezone really really helpful in that respect, because it put my mind at ease, and gave me the confidence and support I needed. I will always be grateful for that.
Anyway, I hope that's saved you four years of message trawling. When you are ready, go for it, and ask all your questions here. Good luck.
