how the body type diet works
The theory behind the diet is that genetically we all have one dominant gland and it's important not to overstimulate this gland with thewrong type of food or exercise. The glandular Body Type Diet recognisesthat the foods you crave are usually the worst for you.
Dr Abravanel says around 35 per centof people fit clearly within one bodytype, while 40 per cent have some characteristics but not all.
Take our quiz and find out what glandular type you are most likely to be.

You're a Controller or pituitary type. You probably have short limbs, have the most energy in the morning, like quiet time alone or activities such as walking or meditation. If you're female, your breasts are likely to be moderate-sized.
Tall Controllers have a tendency towards musculoskeletal disorders, valvular heart disease and anxiety; while shorter types can be prone to diabetes, says Dr Walker.
They should eat plenty of vegetables, protein (not dairy) and drink fenugreek herbal tea. They should eat fruit and wholegrains in moderation and shouldcut down on dairy products, caffeine, sugar and flour-based foods, he advises.
The best exercise is a regular aerobic program with equal concentration on resistance training.
Mostly Bs
You're dominated by the thyroid. You perform at a frenetic pace, then crash. If you're a woman, your breasts are likely to be small. Thyroid types who are out of balance can experience palpitations, muscular chest pains, gastrointestinal problems and chronic fatigue. Eat plenty of vegetables, protein, including dairy, and drink raspberry-based herbal tea, suggests Dr Walker. Eat fruit and wholegrains in moderation and minimise sweets, caffeine, flour and sugary foods. This type is much better lifting weights in the gym than focusing on aerobic activity.
Mostly Cs
You're ruled by the adrenal gland. You have a constant supply of energy and, if you're female, have large breasts with a small bottom and small hips. You can be more prone to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, so eat fruits and vegetables and wholegrain foods regularly, nuts and caffeine in moderation and minimise your intake of red meat, eggsand shellfish, says Dr Walker. Try drinking parsley herbal tea and snacking on fruit. As for exercise, a combination of aerobics and stretching is ideal.
Mostly Ds
Gonadal types are always female and have their ovaries as the dominant gland. They have small to slightly above average-sized breasts and can gain weight easily. They may also be prone to high cholesterol and problems such as fibroids and ovarian cysts. They should eat plenty of fruit and vegies, low-fat dairy products, low-GI carbs, fish, chicken and turkey, lentils, nuts, eggs and tofu and drink red clover herbal tea, saysDr Walker. Have sugar, caffeine and oliveoil in moderation and cut down on spicyand creamy foods and red meat. Gonadal types should concentrate on aerobic exercise, upper-body strength, resistance work and stretching.
Finally, Dr Walker says: "Like all types of eating plans, don't think that you can try it for a few weeks and alter your long-term health outlook. To stay healthy you need a lifelong diet and exercise program based on eating less and exercising more."
other body-type systems
Ayurveda describes three fundamental mind/body types: Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which embody different combinations of the five elements: air, ether, fire, water and earth.
Traditional Chinese medicine also studies the relation of the body and health with the five elements, except that ether is replaced by metal, says Chinese medicine practitioner Peter Apte.
William Sheldon's original body-typing system divided people into endomorphs, mesomorphs and ectomorphs. The dominant systems of each are: Endomorps - digestive system, mesomorphs - musculature and circulatory system, ectomorphs - nervous systemsand brains.
