There a many natural therapies that at first glance seem unlikely to do anything, but with a practise and a deeper knowledge of the therapy one finds immense value in them. I place Oil Pulling firmly in this category. Apart from the obvious mouth cleaning benefit, there are deeper and less obvious ones to be had. This is an Ayurvedic therapy, not dissimilar to Abhyanga and Shirodhara where oil is either massaged into the body or dripped onto the forehead. I have a friend whose life long migraines were cured by Shirodhara. She is one among many who have had very significant benefits from such therapies. As far as I can gather this is not thousands of years worth of placebo effect.
It is unwise to just write of a therapy because it is unfamiliar and doesn't make sense to you, especially when its practical roots are many thousands of years old.
Example: Sitz baths make no sense to me, but that is because I am uneducated about them, but I don't doubt that they are a powerful therapy in the right hands. Before writing such a therapy off it would be useful to investigate it thoroughly.
