I break my fasts with raw fruits, melons are particularly suggested due to their getting the bowels moving again. And as has already been mentioned only small meals to start with, maybe one or two pieces of fruit worth, so not digging into a whole watremelon for example. ;) But raw fruit moves through your stomach very quickly so it is recommended (as has already been said) that you should have another small meal only two hours later, and the first two or three days at least will probably be like this.
It is suggested to take as many days recovering from a fast as you have fasted. I cut this number in half and aim to eat only fruit and fresh juices in that first half of the recovery period. As my system starts to respond to the new food I will introduce freshly made almond milk banana smoothies which have been a staple for me since first reading Fit For Life many years ago. I also include avocado's after a few days and there is usually plenty of variety and bulk to keep me happy.
In the second half of the recovery period I start to add raw salads, on their own to start with and then adding one other cooked food each day towards the end of the recovery period to keep my diet fully Combined. I will add to the salad things like soaked and cooked beans, plain nut loafs, tofu, cooked veggies and towards the end maybe a veggie burger or sausage or something similar that I can share with my children.
Whole fruits will get your bowels moving as quickly as they need to be, and their natural water content makes them the perfect soft food to start your refeeding. Soup may work but it definitely won't work as well and it's water content is added after being removed from the raw foods, so the meal is processed and at least not as effective. Cooked vegetables have had some of the water content removed and not replaced so while they may seem to be soft in themselves think about what a glue mashed potato can become after being left on a plate for a few hours, this can also happen in your digestive system. The other disadvantage I see for cooked foods is the craving factor, the risk of wanting more and giving in to that desire. It is best to keep to fruits in my opinion as they have a naturally high water content which aids their passage if for no other reason.
Raw vegetables I would wait till the second half of the recovery period myself also though vegetable juices with the fruit and fruit juices almost straight away. Also during the second half of the recovery period I introduce raw nuts and dried fruit, this especially being useful for taking with you if you are out away from your salads during the day.
I certainly don't think you need to take any pre-emptive action to get your bowels moving, the raw fruit will do this naturally. It could take a few days depending on many factors but it will happen naturally in it's own time. All things being equal fruit will not block your system or otherwise damage it on the way through and that to me is an all important consideration.
I broke my fast in this way after my recent 14 day fast and my bowels were regular after a couple of days and have stayed that way since. Whereas in the past I have added healthy cooked foods like cooked veggies and maybe a bit of brown rice etc too early and have paid for it with intestinal problems. Enough to make me very strict on breaking my fasts properly after that!
It sounds like you've got a fair bit to consider in the next few days. Best of luck with it all!
Andrew.
