His many articles, best-selling books, tapes and videos serve as a testimony to his loving commitment to those who choose to take an active role in their own healing process. He and his wife, Bobbie, have introduced the concept of individual and group therapy based on "carefrontation," a loving, safe, therapeutic confrontation enabling everyone to understand his or her healing potential.
Motivational, inspirational and down-to-earth, Bernie's approach is one of compassion, caring and love coupled with a wonderful sense of humor. His message of hope and love is extended to all who are open to seeking a whole person approach for living life fully each day.
Bernie (as he prefers to be called) attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He holds memberships in two scholastic honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, and graduated with honors. His surgical training was at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is a retired pediatric and general surgeon. Today, Bernie lectures extensively around the world, sharing his message of Peace, Love and Healing.
In 1978, Bernie began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. The same year, he founded Exceptional Cancer Patients based upon his loving philosophy of creating awareness for using one's healing potential to overcome the challenges of difficult times. ECaP (www.ecap-online.org - Bernie's official website) is now under the direction of Barry Bittman, MD, Director of the Mind-Body Wellness Center, Meadville, PA. Programs include retreats for people with cancer, a 3-level training program in mind-body medicine for healthcare professionals and resources for living well. Bernie's new program Insights for Living Beyond Cancer developed with Dr. Bittman, is offered at the Center and is used for the retreats as well. Offered as a complementary therapy in conjunction with traditional medicine, Insights for Living Beyond Cancer provides meaningful options and inspiration to help individuals embrace the challenges of illness, realize their unique capacity to be exceptional and begin healing of mind, body and spirit.
As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by an illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of medical ethics and spiritual issues with which our society grapples today. Bernie continues his pioneering efforts in the field of mind-body interaction and healing, patient empowerment and the humanizing of medical education and care. Never before has there been a better opportunity to offer his inspirational message of Love, Hope and Healing.
