Last night I gave a talk at my speakers club, the theme of the talk was to “uplift the spirit” I am putting my speech below and I hope it uplifts your spirit for the day. x


Welcome to my talk on uplifting your spirits – for slimmers, imagine me with you now shedding some light on how we can make our slimming journey happier, turning it from a miserable experience to a journey towards not only a slimmer body but also a better life.

I, like many of you, have been a professional dieter all my life. It’s not a happy life is it? Always feeling as though you have the wrong body on! Losing weight, as we all know, is never easy, especially if you eat because your life is not working well.

I’ve taught yoga for 25 years, taught exercise for 25 years, taught personal development for 25 years, and throughout all this I struggled with my weight and body image. I discovered that each approach did not always work. But when I mixed them together, in my own way, “voila” you have an effective system of weight management. People all over the world are finding that this winning combination really works, they are happier and healthier, and AT LAST something works for them, rather than against them.

I have turned the old way of dieting on its head. Conventionally, we are led to believe that we will be happy when we reach a slim body, but I found that when I lost weight my life was still in disarray and I still felt I was fat – I suffered from a fat mind! In YFS we do the reverse, we get our lives in order first and then we are much more likely to reach for the right foods, without horrendous cravings and binging. It makes sense doesn’t it?

I would like to share with you the 3 YFS Successful slimming principles that will work for you.

Principle 1 – CONNECT WITH YOUR BODY WISDOM. There is no magic diet and no magic pill .Calorie controlled diets frequently do not work, they didn’t work for me and may not work for you too. In the past I’ve been on many diets, stuck rigidly to them and ended up sometimes putting on more weight, so depressing. I also believe that methods of weight loss based on shaming you to lose weight are hurtful and destructive. Would you teach little children to learn by shaming and blaming them, No, of course not, you love them and praise them and get their minds working in positive ways, you make them feel safe and secure knowing that they will be successful. We do that with the essential coaching segment of my YFS programme.

We assume that because so and so diet worked for someone else that it will work for us, we rush out buy the book try it, but because we have not consulted our bodies, our own magnificent inner wisdom, it fails. It’s like the game snakes and ladders, up a ladder diet feel great and whoops an emotional binge and we slide back worse than when we started. Yippee another ladder (new diet) off we go struggling up the ladder and guess what, another mistake and down we go. So, know the game plan before you start, get your life in order, be in control of your body and mind, and tune in through the awareness my programme provides and you can miss the snakes and go to the one ladder which will get you out of the self-defeating” dieting game”. I maintain that we are all individuals, so we all have individual food needs at different times. But eat healthily, exercise sensibly, de-stress and your body will let you know what you should or shouldn’t eat. It can help you design a perfect designer eating plan for YOU. And you will enjoy eating foods filled with healthy life force, which make you feel younger and more energetic, rather than dead foods which make you slugging. It’s all very simple really, isn’t it?

Principle 2 is PRACTISE REGULAR MINDFUL EXERCISE. I did exercise big time – I even bought a health and fitness club to make sure I did exercise! I frantically exercised to burn calories, and my goodness it takes a lot of hard aerobic exercise to burn off a small chocolate bar. It’s just not worth it is it? Much better not to have the darn thing in the first place. Especially when you did not really want it. How can you develop that kind of willpower? Exercise in a way that tones the mind as well as the body.

Life today is so hectic and fast, so we need to slow down occasionally, to rebalance and recharge, reprogramme our minds for success and put our lives in perspective. So my exercise session is radical and different, it slows us down! This gives us time to shine light on our lives and discern what needs to change for success, not only in slimming but in everything we do. During my session you will create your own oasis of calm, and within this calm you will regenerate, heal and investigate what is REALLY weighing you down. Plus we put positive affirmations to the postures to programme your mind for success. A healthy body and mind automatically makes healthy food choices. You do my yoga programme at least 3 x per week, plus walking, and with the walking you combine the yoga breathing and positive mind setting exercises.

Principle No. 3 MANAGE YOUR STRESS. Unnecessary stress causes chemicals in our bodies to put on weight, plus you stress eat. Have you ever done that – I have. With my YFS system you will learn how to relax at will, any time, any place. I am not going to tie you into knots, rather untie the ones you have picked up over the years of unsuccessful living and dieting. You will never stress eat again. Being relaxed will help you access parts of yourself you never knew you had and you will discover your full potential.

So to put it simply. The 3 Yoga for Slimmers principles, help you to relax, exercise mindfully and gain greater awareness of who you are. I will help you to want to enjoy eating healthily and will help you programme your mind for success.
