Emotions and the Key to Emotional Clarity

Constructive expression is the key to emotional clarity. Constructive means expressing feelings in a way that does not harm the person they are expressed to. For example, saying "I am angry", or "I am frustrated" to someone is different than acting out the anger or frustration. Finding the method of constructive expression that fits our unique characteristics is part of the path to awakening. It may be an art form, or a particular practice, like yoga.

Emotions: Emotions and the key to emotional clarity.
By James Westly

What is the driving force in human existence? What moves us? Why do we get out of bed in the morning? What comes to mind in answer to these questions are phrases like: "I'll be late to work and lose my job," or, "It's a glorious morning, I feel glad to be alive." These are feelings, emotions. The first is fear, the second is love. They are simple examples of mundane events, perhaps, but also windows into a major motivating factor in the lives of us all.

What simple or profound action or event can you think of that does not contain this element? I can think of none. Yet, what do we know of this force, this e-motion, energy in motion? Are we taught how to use it constructively? Do our academic institutions address it at all? Hardly, or only when it becomes defined as pathological, when it gets out of hand. Only recently have some psychologists begun to study the operation of this force in the "normal" person, that is, the person who has the force "under control." For most of us, it is the elephant in the room we choose to ignore. There it stands, bellowing and blowing, while we pretend it doesn't exist.

If we continue to ignore it, and that certainly is a choice, we may rest assured that it will continue to have an unconscious influence upon our lives. This can mean many things, from having unacknowledged feelings producing behaviors we don't intend, to producing disease conditions. I say this not so much in the way of waving a stick at you, as to impress upon you of the impact emotions have upon our lives.

Anyone who wishes to spiritually awaken must address this aspect of their life. Self-observation is the starting place. Becoming aware of our emotional states and studying how they impact our personal existence is essential work. We each are unique beings. Observing your unique emotional process, without attempting to change it, is a fundamental piece of self-knowledge.

With clear prolonged observation comes an ever greater degree of choice. As the patterns of your emotional reactions begin to emerge into your awareness, you will find that some of them serve you and some do not. With the knowledge you gain from self-observation you will begin to see what your "buttons" are and how life circumstances press them. Eventually you will become able to see the train coming before it arrives, and then make conscious decision as to whether you want to get on it or not. This gives you the choice of interacting rather than reacting to circumstances.

But even this is a side benefit. The greater degrees of awareness that come with spiritual awakening cannot occur if our consciousness is clouded with unresolved emotional issues. When our emotional center is clear and quiet it becomes a profound organ of perception. This is the place, physically located in the solar plexus or third chakra, where intuitive knowing arises.

If we embrace the fundamental division of emotions into those of fear and those of love, we can see the destructive feelings arise out of fear. Exposing our fear to our consciousness is the most powerful tool we have. When we observe and acknowledge the operation of fear in our inner world, we neutralize it. It ceases to have any power. The negative, destructive emotion is effectively transformed into its opposite, love, and we are healed.

Developing the ability to focus our consciousness to perform these acts of observation and transformation is a lifelong learning process. The more we practice, the more skilled we become. The more skilled we become, the greater the challenge we attract. Meeting the greater challenge expands the development of our spiritual awareness. Where the expansion of this potential takes us is a delicious unknown, part of The Mystery, the part, for me, that makes this journey so worth while.

James Westly combines Hindu Satsanga, hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in a technique that by-passes ego structure to heal inner blocks and traumas. He also leads a group of seekers working with the ideas described in the Practical Wisdom material. Read more at http://sun-gel.com/articles/pw/
